A girl said to me recently that she was amazed that my mom and I actually seemed close. She was even more shocked when I responded that we were actually best friends. I felt incredibly sorry for her when she continued to say that she was actually not close to her mom at all, because I honestly don't know what I would do without mine.
My mom is not the usual mom, and although that sounds like a cringey start to a children's book about their superhero mom, it is true in my case. My mom doesn't bake buns, or cook the dinner every night and she isn't the one to force me into my room to study; and I don't see any of these things as bad things.
In replacement of the baking, I am left with a mom who is not only one of my best friends but we are also a team. You don't tend to get one of us without the other. We work together, we attend meetings and events together and we also have some kick-ass Taylor Swift jamming sessions together.
Some people, well most people, say that we are alike and I can't disagree with them. It's not just our blond locks that make us similar but sometimes we are walking out of the house together and we realise that we are actually wearing very similar outfits. (Bonus is that I can actually borrow a lot of her clothes.)
That's just my mom. Others may not have the exact same kind of connection, but everyone has some sort of connection to their mom if they are lucky enough to have them in their lives.
As a stereotype we are all generally expected to come to that point where we think our mom is so uncool and couldn't even dream of being associated with her (thankfully that has never happened to me) but your mom is the one that will always be there for you. There is nothing embarrassing about saying that your mom is your best friend.
It doesn't make you sad or clingy. You are a human person, and your mom is the person that made you this human person. She is kind of responsible for your existence.
Since my mom supports everything that I do (except maybe not every outfit I have ever worn), I know that she will be reading this, so thanks mom.
If your mom is the cookie baking type or not, remember that you are lucky to have her in your life or even send her a quick text to tell her that you love her.
Sure she may text back "what do you want" after this outburst of emotion but you can just give a little nod towards this article if it helps....
