Teens Know Best

Teens Know Best

When I started writing articles and blogs, I did so because I was trying to be the voice for the teenagers around me and I was trying to be the much needed primary source for parents of teenagers out there. In many ways, I think that I have been quite successful in this endeavor. But, somehow, some adults still believe that they know the thoughts and emotions of a teenager, better than teenagers know themselves.

There are few things in this world that I hate as much as someone being condescending towards me. I am fully aware that I don't know everything - far from it - but there are nicer ways to tell me so rather than adopting than sicily sweet voice which is as full of disdain as it is with falseness. Perhaps if you are telling me about the theory of quantum mechanics, I may be clueless. But if you begin giving me a lecture on how 'teens are the way they are' because of x, y and z ; I believe that I have the right to object. Because no matter how may online courses you do to try and keep up with the times, I think that I know what's going on in my own life.

Reading that back I sound like a bit of a 'know it all' teenager that some of you feel like you know so much about. But hear me out.

If you are the adult in this situation, then I invite you to take a trip back in time to when you were in your teenage years. Rebelling against society in a pair of Dc Martens and a whole lot of attitude. I bet you felt like adults didn't have a clue what was going on in your life and you were probably correct.

I think people preach about how different society is until it comes to the question that perhaps they may not understand how it affects the new generation. Well you are right in one thing, social media has changed a lot of things. We all communicate in different ways, and it can affect us all differently. We, the millenials, are living through it. So I think we are pretty well versed in it all.

I turn 18 in two days and I want to continue to be the voice that speaks for the teenage generation. You just have to be willing to listen.
