Gatsby at the Gate
I first heard about this amazing play as it flooded my feeds a few weeks ago and I knew instantly that this was something that I could not miss! If you haven't heard of it - this performance is not like any other play. Instead of simply sitting down and watching it, you get to experience it by joining in on one of Gatsby's famous parties - with 1920's costume and all!
I studied the Great Gatsby for my leaving cert, so I know that thing inside and out; which I knew would make the whole experience even better. And I wasn't wrong.
So, all dolled up in our House of Delphine dresses and jewels, we headed off to the Gate theater (and oddly enough we were the first there!) Greeted by the voice of Gatsby, and a very dapper man with an excellent accent, we glided into the transformed Gate theater. With glasses of champagne in hand we ventured around the set, with a few little tables here and there, with a beautiful staircase as the grand feature.
The room was filled with guests in gilded 1920's outfits (only a few were without them and very out of place!) and before we knew it we were joined with some of the characters. I spotted Daisy and Tom among us pretty quickly, but before they could make their introductions, we found ourselves in conversation with a very convincing George Wilson! I have such respect for those actors, making conversation in character night after night must be hard but they did it well!
I was unsure how they were going to tie the whole thing together, but Nick took the stage in a kind of soliloquy fashion and the whole thing began! Based on where we were, we were guided into Myrtle Wilson's apartment and that was one entertaining adventure!!
The actors were superb, the cocktails delightful and the whole experience was just absolutely amazing! My only complaint is that I actually want to go again... Simply because depending on where you were positioned, you only got to see some of the show (except for the more pivotal moments) and I want to try and see what I missed!!
So what are you waiting for? Grab your sparkliest dancing shoes and get going!
